Facing the artistic heritage left by Paul Cezanne (1839-1906), the two menrespected each other but were reluctant to follow suit. Picasso read aboutCezanne's distortion and sense of space, while Matisse appreciated Cezanne'scolors and his ability to combine patterns and backgrounds. They were alsoinspired by the paintings and woodcarvings of Paul Gauguin (1849-1903).
